So apparently I feel like I am the queen of Crashing things.

I need a tough computer in which I can effeciently work and won’t yell at it.  I do a lot of yelling at computers, you see.

I have no patience with them, except when I am doing what I need to do.

I use them for the following (in no particular order):

  • super web surfing
  • blogging
  • twittering
  • intense Photoshop and Illustrator work (a piece that I am working on currently involves importing ~1.5 kb worth of text into an illustrator image.  CS3 regularly would crash on school machines due to the intensity of the file rendering, at ~2.2 kb.
  • video editing.  The standard setup, I know, is FinalCut, but I am not tied-tied to it.
  • CSS/HTML work that is really slow going.
  • even slower coding work for a newbie in Processing I can’t run stuff.

I am interested in:

  • Blender/Maya/3dSx
  • Flash/ActionScript
  • Learning the command line of Linux more deeply without having to be seriously invested in a Linux Machine yet
  • Scala/Spde
  • Ruby
  • Javascript (which I can’t do right now
  • Php (can’t do that)
  • Running a baby Apache server or something like it to test/learn on
  • Ruby
  • Python
  • Mastering my Fear of Java, and certain sections of coding in general (though I already got some good advice on that)

I also have a bang it up attitude, really high design sensitbility, and I think Windows hates me some days.  (That being said, if Push comes to shove and Windows is the best option- as long as I don’t have to take loads of care of it so I can focus on what I do need to do, then Windows it is)

I also tend to write a lot.  And sometimes I need to lay it out pretty.  But that isn’t essential, since that seems to be cross platform.

What is a decent priced machine that is not going to be whoppingly expensive, that I can travel with (I need to travel a bit over the next year), that can run as much of this as possible, without anxiety, but will allow a confort zone to you know, learn on.  Especailly because I will probably also need this one other perpehrial, Wacom Pad…(I’d get that used)

Thanks World!

i use a velocity laptop as my primary computer made for gamers – with windows xp – i would stick with gamers computers – they gotta perform under pressure too – i am writing this on a velocity laptop that i bought when vista just came out at best buy and it still works fine with adobe CS2 – the key lettering are worn out – that is how much i use it – hope that helps

I don't play games though and because I do large text rendering in CS3 which keeps crashing because I can't break down the text and want to do 3d creation – got the art bug's needs not the gamer. I'm worried about saving while I render so I can edit a few states back, and I need to move to CS4 to resolve some issues. ( And this is all before the avid v final cut debate…)

i hear ya – i don't play games either but i figure a gaming computer would be better built and configured too for obvious reasons – and hmmm text rendering to image ? i use adobe cs2 studio and also do some video editing with adobe premiere on the windows xp velocity laptop – story is vista sucks and most people i know are either on a mac or on windows machine stick or return to xp – i am a moving/still/audio imagemaker ViZualPoetry.com from my still and audio and the avid v final cut debate is in my estimations hype their purpose is cut and paste – the strategy as far as i see it – doesn't matter what you cut and paste with make sure you have a program that will unlink the audio – and that you make sure your audio is recorded right because you edit to audio best to also have external audio recording system to back up your camera audio – you can live with bad video but not with bad audio – for me if i need special effects or transitions which i fight putting in special effects for my doc work – i use aftereffects for most post things – it all depends on what you want to do though – i hear ya about rendering sucks when it crashes – best to reboot before rendering and don't multi-task too many conflicts for resources and i assume you know to keep rendering data not on same drive as program drive – also there is a way to just have minimal programs running in background too on xp – sounds like your crashing issue is too many programs running that don't need to be running too – also could be a virus hogging or corrupting a file too – i also use blip.tv for rendering especially for flash rather then my own computer also ON2.com which is the back behind flash video files and last i knew also has rendering online service if i recall – if you want to carry this conversation off the comments you can reach me at my email too –

For certain purposes in Broadacst not hype. So I have been taught. So you get stuck with the cost. And I am stuck doing a lot of text work/multichannel work because of the type of work I do. Bleh.

i hear ya – on broadcast – but still i believe non-linear editing is two part process – cut and past and transitions and titles and since you are worried about crashes then i would do transition after cutting and pasting and minimal transitions – not sure what you do – but stuck in doing a lot of text work/multichannel hmmm sounds like a lot of Bleh as you say – don't buy into the hype is what i am saying – easy to get overwhelmed – simple is usually way to go rather then making things complicated – harder to be simple then complicated too – i sometimes use a program mpeg streamclip http://www.squared5.com/ because it works on both mac and pc too but doesn't have sound unlinking if i recall they have new version up maybe it does now – don't know but i should – hope that helps some – as far as computer i would still buy a velocity lap top or there is a heavy duty built for video editing lap top but i think its also heave in the pocket and to carry – but not sure who is making what and where now – don't have time to do the home work but if you find out let me know – g-oh
